Celebrate the new year... with a divorce

Monday, 11 January 2010

MORE people file for divorce in January than at any other time of the year, experts have said.

The Law Society has said that couples often reach breaking point after Christmas due to family tension, and the economic downturn had added to the pressure.

Mel Merrit, spokeswoman for relationship counselling charity Relate, said: “At Relate, we see a 50 per cent increase in calls in January compared with December.

“It tends to be after the holiday that people notice cracks in the family that might have been hidden throughout the year.”

Elizabeth Jones, a family law specialist at Fisher Meredith law firm in Kennington Road, Kennington, said the firm had received an influx of calls from separating couples.

She said: “I’ve had quite a few phone calls from people already.

"It’s the pressure cooker of togetherness over Christmas that causes it and New Year.

“People make new year resolutions and commitments to change their lives.

“Sometimes that means changing their relationship.”
