GASWORKS - INVITATION: Exhibition Preview - this Friday 27 May, 6.30-9pm

INVITATION

The Work of the Spirit (Parade)
A solo exhibition by Tamar Guimarães

PREVIEW: FRIDAY 27 MAY, 6.30 - 9PM   |   EXHIBITION CONTINUES UNTIL 17 JULY

Image: Tamar Guimarães, Canoas (2010). Video still.

For her first solo exhibition in the UK, Tamar Guimarães presents a newly commissioned short film alongside two existing works: Canoas (2010) and A Man Called Love (2008).

Guimarães' research-based practice deals with the staging of history. Gathering and manipulating archival images and texts, the artist investigates the relationship between labour, culture and privilege. Her speculative narratives are rooted in competing instances of modernity, from the theatres of 1910s London to the modernist architecture of 1950s Brazil. Often foregrounding social and class structures, they call into question the role of the left.

The slide presentation and accompanying publication A Man Called Love give an account of Francisco Candido Xavier (1910 - 2002), a Brazilian psychic medium who wrote over 400 books, dictated to him by the dead. Tracing an unusual relationship between redemption and forms of resistance, the work describes how Xavier's version of Spiritism aligned all too neatly with the conservative views of the ruling class during the years of dictatorship in Brazil from 1964 to 1985.

The video Canoas centres upon a cocktail party at Oscar Niemeyer's Casa das Canoas; a masterpiece of Brazilian modernist architecture bordered by tropical jungle. In these seductive surroundings, we overhear snippets of guests' conversations, which range from discussions about the quality of the champagne to the questioning of Gilberto Freyre's observation that “Brazil has an eroticism that transcends race and class”.

Guimarães' new commission documents the teaching of a choreographed dance from Léonide Massine's modernist ballet Parade (1917), looking at the overlap of the symbolic and economic value of works of art.

White Bear Theatre: Special Offer for Kennington Association Members - “Two for One”

The Winterling

by Jez Butterworth

West waits in a burnt-out farmhouse, on Dartmoor, in the depths of winter, for two associates from the city.  The wine has been poured and the revolver loaded.  But who or what is waiting upstairs?

“I like London.  I like pavements.  I like to walk out the door and not sink up to my tits in primordial sludge.  I don’t like trench-foot.  I don’t like sheep.  I don’t like the country.  It’s covered in shit.”

The Winterling is a darkly comic drama built on a myriad of startling characters and an unrelenting barrage of rapid-fire wit.

“a sense of menace invades every conversation
like a razor-blade…  knock-out one-liners.”
Time Out

Stone Junction and The White Bear Theatre present a revival of “The Winterling”, written by the Oliver Award winning playwright, Jez Butterworth. This show follows the success of Jez Butterworth’s current Broadway smash-hit “Jerusalem” (which won Best Play Awards at the Critics’ Circle, Evening Standard, and WhatsOnStage.com Awards) and like this later work contains his trademark effervescent dialogue and fascinating characters.

“Jerusalem [sic] marks the maturity of a wordsmith with a dazzling gift
for pastiche into a genuine, utterly singular artist.”
New York Times

This is the premier production of Stone Junction, an innovative new theatre company, dedicated to the revival of works by popular, modern playwrights from the UK and worldwide.

SLAS Visit to Sussex by coach Saturday 9th July 2011

SOUTHWARK AND LAMBETH
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY

Summer Coach Tour

The destinations of the coach tour on Saturday, July 9th, 2011, are scheduled to be Bishopstone, Seaford, Eastbourne and Pevensey.  The last two of these will make up the greater part of the tour.

It is hoped to visit the ancient church at Bishopstone, which is both pre-Conquest and Norman, and sited just north of Seaford amidst the South Downs.  Seaford was the ‘old haven’, three miles east of the present port of Newhaven.

Eastbourne is known as a gracious resort, which the Victorians called ‘the empress of watering-places’, largely laid out on the estates of the Dukes of Devonshire and the Davies family.  Historically, it was a village a little inland, centred on St. Mary’s Church in what is now called the Old Town. The Town Hall of Victorian Eastbourne is sited where the hamlet of Southbourne once existed, and a few old houses on the modern seafront represent the original tiny resort of ‘Sea Houses’.  These, and a few other hamlets, made up the new town in the later 19th century.  Just as St. Mary’s represents the original village, so the Victorian spire of St. Saviour’s represents the Victorian town.  Lambethans may think it looks familiar; G.E. Street designed it and it is very similar to his spire at St. John’s, Vassall Road, between Brixton Road and Camberwell New Road.

Pevensey is well-known for its huge Roman fort, known as Anderida, which was one of the Saxon Shore forts of late Roman Britain.  Its walls enclose ten acres.  Within this enclosure there stand the remains of a Norman castle, which had a central role in the story of William the Conqueror and offers an interesting story of mediaeval sieges.  Soldiers were stationed in the castle as recently as the Second World War.  This great monument is set in an attractive village, with a parish church and high street close by and another church - Westham - just to the west.

The cost of a place will be £27, as in 2010.  Passengers may join the coach at the Old Vic at 8.45 a.m. and then from Streatham High Road.

All enquiries should be directed to the organiser:
Stephen Humphrey, 1 Cornish House, Otto Street, London, SE17 3PE (Tel.: 020-7735 6716; E-mail: stephenhumphrey456@btinternet.com).

VISIT TO SUSSEX
By coach on Saturday, July 9th, 2011
The destinations will be Bishopstone, Seaford, Eastbourne and Pevensey.
These places at the eastern end of the South Downs offer many ancient buildings, including the pre-Conquest and Norman church at Bishopstone, and the great Roman fort of Anderida at Pevensey, within whose enclosure stand the remains of a Norman castle.  Eastbourne is a gracious Victorian resort, but derives from a mediaeval village, ‘Old Town’, a little inland.
COST: £27
The coach will leave from the Old Vic at Waterloo at 8.45 a.m. and from Streatham High Road at 9 a.m. or soon afterwards. Return in mid-evening.

‘Short-sighted’ sell-off scuppers extra classes

News
‘Short-sighted’ sell-off scuppers extra classes
Tuesday, 12 April 2011
A TOWN hall has been blasted for selling a school building that could plug the growing primary places crisis in a borough.
The South London Press revealed on Tuesday that 177 children had not received any of their chosen six primary school places in Lambeth.
Around three-quarters of kids were given their first-choice school, or 2,230 from 2,977 applications.
A 40 per cent increase in applications over the past four years has meant many of Lambeth’s primary schools have increased the number of kids they teach.
These so-called “bulge classes” often require temporary buildings such as portable cabins to be used.
Some schools do not have enough land to expand beyond a single form of entry each year.
They include Archbishop Sumner Primary in Reedworth Street, Kennington. The popular primary only takes in 30 pupils each September.
Parents want Lambeth council to allow it to expand into a former school opposite.
But the old Olive School in Wincott Street has been listed for sale in the council disposals list this year and could be sold to housing developers.
Archbishop Sumner is rated as “outstanding” by Ofsted inspectors. Kennington parent Helen De Vane failed to gain a place at Archbishop Sumner for her son this week.
She said: “It’s so frustrating that, for years, the good and outstanding schools only have one class in each year with no room to expand.
“Here is a chance to put that right. The demand is there. The building is there.
“It is utterly ludicrous to knock it down and send kids miles away to get a poorer education.
“Lambeth says the money will be spent elsewhere in the borough, but that is short-sighted.”
At Streatham and West Norwood primaries there were more than two applications for every place this year.
Immanuel & St Andrew Primary in Buckleigh Road, Streatham, Jubilee Primary in Tulse Hill and Stockwell Primary in Stockwell Road plan to make bulge classes from September.
That means an extra 90 places.
Immanuel & St Andrew wants £5million to build new classrooms. Currently the two forms of entry are taught in temporary cabins.
Meanwhile, Sudbourne Primary School in Hayter Road, Brixton, wants to expand into vacant land in nearby Acre Lane.
Councillor Pete Robbins, Lambeth’s cabinet member for children and young people’s services, said: “The council cannot justify diverting our very limited resources on creating new primary school places in an area where there are spare places at other very good schools nearby.
“This is in stark contrast to the south of the borough where an explosion in pupil numbers in Norwood and Streatham has put huge pressure on primary school places.
“We must concentrate our limited resources where the need is greatest to prevent children in the south of the borough facing long commutes to school or larger class sizes.”
Under Lambeth council’s last Labour administration, school buildings were sold to raise cash.
They included Haselrigge Primary School in Clapham, Santley Primary in Brixton, Ashby Mill Primary in Brixton, Dick Sheppard School in Tulse Hill, Effra Primary in Brixton and Grove House Primary in Tulse Hill.
Kate Hoey, Labour MP for Vauxhall, demanded Lambeth council remove the Olive School from the town hall disposals list.
She said: “It is short-sighed to sell off when there are growing numbers of children in north Lambeth who cannot get into their primary school of choice.
“Lambeth should not revisit its mistakes of the past by selling off educational buildings only to discover later the need for more school places.”
