Presents

NIGHT OF JANUARY 16TH

By Ayn Rand

Directed by Jane Moriarty

"Who is on trial in this case? Karen Andre?
No! It's you, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, who are here on trial."

A smash hit on Broadway in the 1930s, Night Of January 16th is by the author
of the hugely influential The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged.  It takes the
form of a New York courtroom drama, a murder trial, in which members of the
audience become the Jury and decide the verdict. Through snappy dialogue,
cut-throat cross-examinations and diverse characters, the story unravels in
thriller-style, with plenty of wit, suspense and surprise.

The trial focuses on the death of Bjorn Faulkner, an international business
tycoon who held a whip over the financial world. The woman accused of his
murder is Karen Andre, his secretary-mistress of 10 years. An idol and a
swindler, Bjorn Faulkner came to New York to get a loan and save his
enterprises from disaster. There he met the daughter of his wealthy
creditor, the beautiful Nancy Lee, and swiftly married her. Three months
after their marriage, Bjorn's body came crashing down from his 50-story-high
penthouse apartment.

Now, New York's top attorneys battle it out, with bankers, gangsters and two
determined women, to get to the truth behind his mysterious death and
colossal downfall. As we learn about the dead man, the witnesses and what
happened on the Night of January 16th, it becomes clear that it is not the
man or his mistress who are on trial, but the audience themselves.

Ayn Rand (1905-1982) has had an undeniable and contentious impact on the
literary, philosophical, economic and political history of the 20th century.
Most notably, her values have influenced Alan Greenspan, the American
economist and ex Chairman of the US Federal Reserve. As a writer, she is
most famous for her best-selling and controversial novels, The Fountainhead
and Atlas Shrugged and for developing a philosophical system called
Objectivism.

This is the inaugural production of the newly-formed, audience-centred Half
Door Theatre company, and it will be the first London revival of Ayn Rand's
revised and authorised script.

The Art of Loving

A Talk By
Dr. Dean Whittington

Money can't buy you love and love may be all you need, but whilst the
culture industry promotes an ideal type, it remains a mirage for many.
Trapped in eternal solitude and isolation, connecting with flailing arms,
the desire to reach out becomes caught in various meshes. Erich Fromm's the
"Art of Loving" cuts through the swathe to reveal that giving and receiving
love is an "art" needing practice and refinement.

Dean Whittington PhD, Harley St. Psychotherapist and author of Beaten into
Violence and Bath of Steel will talk about the 21st Century modern malaise
of isolation in crowds and its impact on contemporary living. Then the way
forward can be discussed.

Talk: 50mins followed by "question and answer".

1.5 Hour CPD Certificates available.

Performance Dates:

Monday, 6th February at 7.30

Tickets:  £5

Questionnaire about the Durning Library

A message from Friends of the Durning Library

The Durning Library is an important part of our local community.
Lambeth Council is currently considering the future organisation of
its library service.  We know that there are to be severe budget cuts
and if the community does not step in, our library may not survive.
As the library’s Friends, we need your help to decide how best to plan
for its future, and so we need to hear your views, whether or not you
use the library.
Please complete this short survey by clicking on the link below – it
will not take long and it is important that as many local people as
possible have their say.
www.durninglibraryfriends.org.uk/survey

Paper copies are available at the Durning library if needed, or you
can download a PDF version from the website.  Please complete the
survey by 30th January.  And please forward it to anyone else you
think might be interested.

We shall be holding a public meeting at the Durning Library on Monday
27 February to enable everyone to give us their views and the results
of the survey will contribute to this discussion.

So, PLEASE complete this questionnaire, either on paper or on-line,
and return it to us by Monday 30 January.

Thank you in advance,

Priscilla Baines
Chairman, Friends of the Durning Library
