Rumours of a merger...

Dear Neighbours

Rumour has it that proposals of a KA merger with Vauxhall groups have resurfaced.
This idea has been bobbing around for years
and was rejected by the then KA committee back in 2009.
Angus, Tim and others went on to try to form "Kennington Vauxhall Alliance" but it came to nothing.
By way of background, see this link and its attachments:
http://southeasteleven.blogspot.co.uk/2009/07/rcdt-kennington-vauxhall-alliance.html

I love Kennington with all its friendly voluntary groups.
Vauxhall has a plethora of local interest bodies of its own.
Anyway, I thought KOV was the link mechanism.

Just a thought…

Best wishes
Cathy

Sunday Telegraph: 'End of an innings: Time called on Oval landmark'

They are the instantly recognisable backdrop to one of the world’s most famous cricket grounds and a regular element in Henry Blofeld’s Test Match Special commentaries.

But the famous gasometers, which have stood adjacent to The Oval since 1853, have been decommissioned.

The iron structures are now surplus to requirements due to advances in gas storage technology. They can only store 2m cubic feet of gas — enough to supply 2,400 homes a day — and Southern Gas Networks is planning to tear down 111 gasholders around the country during the next 16 years. Fifty-five sites have been earmarked for demolition within the next six years at a cost of £30m.

Planning permission will be needed before the Oval gasholders can be demolished, or developed, but they sit on a prime 12-acre site.

The multi-billion pound Nine Elms development on London’s South Bank, which includes Battersea Power Station, is expected to increase property prices by up to 140pc, creating a “Vauxhall Corridor” that will entice new businesses to the area.

Several local businesses already operate from premises inside The Oval and Surrey County Cricket Club is planning to build new office space next to the pavilion within the next two years with the aim of attracting a sports and creative industry cluster.

“A decision on the future of our London depot gas holder has yet to be reached,” said Southern Gas Networks.

Kennington Companions raise a further £125 for The Haemochromatosis Society

Dear Companions
Well done!!
Including an anonymous donation of £20,
and a couple of private sales e.g. Christmas decorations!
we have raised £125
from on-line sales of Books, CDs and clothing!
This is on top of the £400 raised last year
at the coffee morning and table top sale.
Do please take a look at this link showing the symptoms of this genetic disorder in case you or a friend might be a sufferer...
http://haemochromatosis.org.uk/pages/symptoms.html
We certainly hope not! but:
For a long time it was believed that the disorder was rare, so GH was seldom considered as a possible diagnosis. However, recent surveys of people of Northern European origin have shown a prevalence of 1 in 200 likely to be at risk of developing iron overload. GH is now recognised as being one of the most common genetic disorders.

Our new focus, until the spring weather arrives, is on
so please keep those CDs, Books, etc coming in!

As most of you know, Maureen died on the afternoon of 28 December 2013.   We are all deeply saddened by her passing.  Many of you have inquired as to dates for funeral arrangements.

Funeral Services for Maureen Johnston, MBE will be held at Mortlake Crematorium ( http://www.mortlakecrematorium.org/ ) on 23 January 2014 at 1:30PM.

From 4:30-6:30 on the 23rd there will be a community get together for Maureen to be held in Kennington at Amici's Restaurant ( 205-209 Kennington Lane, London SE11 5QS )  This is not so much a formal memorial service, as an opportunity for local friends and family to come together and remember all the wonderful things Maureen has done for the Kennington, Oval and Vauxhall community.

There will be a memorial service in Cornwall in the Springtime - dates yet to be confirmed.

Maureen has requested that friends and family make a donation to Trinity Hospice ( http://www.trinityhospice.org.uk/donate )  in lieu of sending flowers.

Braeburn Estates, a JV between Canary Wharf Group and Qatari Diar, is working up plans for around 70 affordable homes, a new nursery and green spaces on land in SE11

Estates Gazette
Shell Centre JV eyes Lambeth homes
Lollard-Street-resi-scheme-570

The joint venture behind the proposed redevelopment of the Shell Centre will this week launch a consultation on a major off-site affordable housing scheme in Lambeth.

Braeburn Estates, a joint venture between Canary Wharf Group and Qatari Diar, is working up plans for around 70 affordable homes, a new nursery and green spaces on land around Elkington Point, Brittany Point and the Ethelred Nursery, SE11.

The London Borough of Lambeth owns the freehold to the site, which currently comprises a trio of tower blocks known as the Ethelred towers, developed between 1969 and 1972.

Braeburn plans to develop a residential tower on the site that will be slightly shorter than the existing 20-storey buildings, as well as new low-rise flats and houses.

The site is bordered by Kennington Conservation area to the south and east and by the Walcot Conservation Area to north.

Lollard-Street_-resi-2-570

The Ethelred Estate, which has undergone significant refurbishment in recent years, is one of the largest housing estates in Lambeth.

It was identified for an off-site affordable housing scheme by the partners last year and a soft consultation took place in the summer.

A series of public consultations with the local community will begin on 9 January.

The Shell Centre scheme, which is currently the subject of a public enquiry expected to report in the spring, will create almost 800 new private homes together with 168 affordable houses and 52 extra care units for the elderly and disabled.

Braeburn has proposed building 98 affordable houses, including 52 extra care and 46 intermediate, on site, with around 70 affordable homes off-site at the Lollard Street scheme.

A spokesman for the developers said: “We are hopeful that we will have the outcome of the recent public inquiry within the next few months. If we are given the green light to proceed we would anticipate starting on site later in the summer, such that our timetable for delivery is not significantly impacted.”

The joint venture is acting as development partner to Lambeth for the scheme. Darling Associates is the master planner.
