Nowhere in London conveys nature more serene than Highgate Ponds. They spring from the woods, glide round the contours and drop gently south, as a visual carpet to London floating in the distance. They are still remarkably wild and un-manicured ... Such rare flash floods as do occur on London streets arise from torrential downpours overwhelming incompetentently maintained sewers, as happened last week in Kennington, not Hampstead ponds ...
