Durning Library in danger - please help!

Hi Cathy
Please can you circulate this message to your lists...
Lambeth's latest plans pose a very real threat to our libraries - we
mean CLOSURE.
But it is by no means obvious from the messages being sent out by the council.
Below is the message from Friends of the Durning Library (also attached).

Thank you!
Laura

YOUR LOCAL LIBRARIES ARE IN DANGER!
That includes DURNING LIBRARY.

Lambeth's plan for 'Cultural Services by 2020' is in libraries and at
www.lambeth.gov.uk/culture2020consultation.
Few have read it - or understood its dangerous implications.

The paper proposes to:
CLOSE 2 libraries (Minet, Waterloo) and sell the buildings.
STOP RUNNING 3 libraries (Carnegie, Durning, Upper Norwood), leaving
local people to staff and largely fund them (p.18).

This is completely impractical. It effectively means CLOSURE.

Volunteer-run libraries have no record of success in boroughs like
Lambeth. Where they survive at all, they do not provide anything
resembling a full library service.

NOT ONLY WILL THE DURNING BE LOST -
THERE WILL BE NO PROPER LIBRARY
SERVICE IN MOST OF NORTH LAMBETH.

Friends of the Durning Library will argue that the council's budget
cuts can be made in far less damaging ways.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.
THE CONSULTATION DEADLINE IS 24 APRIL.
