There are spaces available on the Lambeth Horticultural Society's coach trip to Essex on Saturday 13th June, visiting Warley Place and RHS Hyde Hall.

The cost is £21.

Our pick-up is on Kennington Road at the bus stop at the junction with the Black Prince Road ‘the Bingo Hall’ at 9.30am.

Warley Place, near Brentwood, Essex CM13 3HT

The house (no longer there) was the home of Ellen Willmott, who dropped seeds of her favourite Sea Holly, now known as Eryngium giganteum “Miss Willmott’s ghost”, in other people’s gardens. She was famous in her time, and a contemporary of Gertrude Jekyll, William Robinson and EA Bowles. She once had 86 gardeners, but fell on hard times, and after her death the garden was allowed to run wild. Now restored by the Essex Wildlife Trust, it is maintained as a nature reserve. We will be given a talk on the restoration work. There are no facilities at Warley, so we will have a comfort and coffee stop near Brentford prior to our visit.

RHS Hyde Hall, Chelmsford, Essex CM3 8ET

Essex is known for being a dry county, so let’s hope we have a dry day, unlike our last visit. Since then there have been many improvements. The gardens are stunning and there is a lot to see. The Barn restaurant is fully licensed and uses local produce. There is also the Field Café.
