Love London Awards - voting closes soon!

It's the final countdown!

We're three weeks into the voting stage of this year's Love London Awards and things are getting INTENSE, with local venues campaigning hard to woo the public vote. Some are offering free coffees, others free hugs, others just smugly hoping for the best.

Very soon, they'll find out if it's all been worth it, and there's still time for you to make a difference. Polls close at midnight on October 31, meaning this is your last chance to shout about the local restaurants, bars, cafés, shops and cultural institutions that make your part of the city a great place to live.

So go forth, vote, and spread the #LoveLondonAwards word!

The future of Knight's Walk

Conversation opened. 1 unread message.

Lesley Johnson - London Borough of Lambeth knightswalk@lambeth.gov.uk

After a long and extensive period of consultation we are now in a position to confirm the proposal which will be put forward to the 9th November Council Cabinet meeting. This proposal would see:
  • The partial redevelopment of Knight’s Walk;
  • The following homes would be demolished and replaced: 5a - f, 7, 9, 11a - f, 13, 15, 17 and 19 Knight's Walk;
  • The following homes would be retained: 1, 2, 3 Kempsford Road, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 16, 18 and 20 Knight's Walk;
  • Subject to planning, a total of 82 new homes would be built with 64 additional homes, of which at least 25 will be at Council level rents.

After the Cabinet meeting on the 9th we will be in touch again with the outcome of that meeting along with information on what will be happening as a consequence. To provide as much certainty as possible at this stage we have put together an indicative timeline of what we expect to happen if the Council Cabinet agrees to these proposals.

• Appointment of Development Manager by December 2015
• Masterplanning through to Summer 2016
• Confirm masterplan and business plan September 2016
• Planning application December 2016
• Start building Summer 2017

This means we do not expect any building work to start until the Summer of the 2017. Depending on the outcome of the 9th November Cabinet meeting we will be developing a further engagement programme for the project.

Thank you for taking part in the discussions to date.

Yours sincerely,

Lesley Johnson

Written In Dust Thu 12th Nov 19:30

Written In Dust is event cinema and music performance: a contemporary silent film set in Beijing with live music performance, which is a fusion of traditional Chinese and modern British music, composed and performed by classical Chinese musician Ling Peng and pianist/guitarist Andy Middleton. The film tells the tragic tale of three young Chinese rural migrants who come in search of the new life that modern Beijing promises. The tensions created by the pursuit of money and the repression of love lead to moral corruption, betrayal, lies and the ultimate tragedy. The film  repositions and reinvigorates the silent genre as a contemporary storytelling genre, encouraging the creation of new musical composition, collaboration and improvisation. Performance followed by Q&A with the film director, Gareth Rees, and musicians.
Doors open at 18.30 for a 19.30 start.

Bonham London to Brighton Veteran Car Run at Westminster Bridge [1 November]

BONHAM LONDON TO BRIGHTON VETERAN CAR RUN

Sunday 1 November

Cars leave Hyde Park 6.56am-8.30am and cross Westminster Bridge soon after

See 500+ veteran cars - up to 118 years old - pass through the streets of North Lambeth. A celebration of the Emancipation Run held in 1896. Thirty vehicles travelled the 60-miles from London to Brighton to mark the passing into law of the Light Locomotives Act which raised the speed limit from 4mph to 14mph and did away with the requirement for a person to walk in front of a vehicle waving a red flag

to warn other road users. The first reenactment was in 1927 and the LBVCR has been held every year except during World War II and in 1947 due to fuel rationing. Route crosses Westminster Bridge then via Westminster Bridge Road and Kennington Road. This year's theme is celebrating veteran vehicles manufactured in the USA.

The prototype of the aviation drama as we know it, Wings was noted at the time for its technical accuracy and convincing aerial scenes, due in no small part to Wellman having been the only director in Hollywood with actual experience as a fighter pilot.
Despite being a silent film amid the talkie revolution, this $2m production – astronomical for the times – was voted Best Picture at the first-ever Academy Awards ceremony in 1929.
