... We heard that Charlie Chaplin was partial to drinking gin and juice. But he’d probably still doff his bowler hat to the news that a Kennington pub he used to visit as a nipper is giving away pints to punters to celebrate its relaunch.
The Tankard opens on Kennington Road today, brought back to life by the Draft House beer bar chain. So to celebrate, the pub will be giving away pints throughout the month to anybody who utters the secret code: ‘Charlie sent me’, with a total of 100 drinks up for grabs.    ...

Harry T. Harmer, Artist | Spitalfields Life

Harry T. Harmer, Artist | Spitalfields Life

... The facts of the life of Harry T. Harmer (1927-2013) are scarce yet
his distinctive paintings speak eloquently of his personal vision. Born
in Kennington, Harry was afflicted with epilepsy and married his wife
Ruby when they were both in their adolescence. Ruby offered Harry
emotional support in the face of a father who did not recognise his
disorder and the couple enjoyed a marriage that lasted through eight
decades. ...
Disqualified from military service, Harry worked in the parks department
and, possessing a strong sense of justice, he fought for the rights of
fellow workers through many years as a union representative. In the
mid-fifties, Harry discovered an ability to draw and paint, travelling
around Kennington and north of the river to the East End, making
sketches of places that embodied the living city he knew intimately. ...
For most of their married life, Harry and Ruby Harmer occupied a council
flat in a dignified Victorian terrace in Kennington, where Ruby lives
today tending to an appealingly unkempt garden and a posse of
neighbourhood cats. In the back room overlooking the garden where Harry
did his paintings, his small formica topped work table still stands by
the window where today a box of his ashes sits beside a bunch of fresh
flowers that Ruby changes each week. The popularity of Harry’s works
means that Ruby is the devoted custodian of just a few of her husband’s
paintings, and a suitcase of his pencil sketches, press cuttings and
exhibition catalogues. ...

Cultural trip to Ethiopia - January 2018

Dear Companions
At my suggestion, Mike Gebre Yohannes has offered to put together a cultural package vacation to Ethiopia.
As many of you will know, Mike spearheads many of the Ethiopian cultural events here in London including, of course, the Coptic Millennium celebration in Kennington Park.

Mike suggests that January would be the best time to go, especially as we could include the Timkat Celebration in Lalibela. He has connections that would enable us to get discounts on flights with Ethiopian Airlines, hotels, etc.
At this stage, we'd like to hear from anyone interested and ideas about what you would like to see/do during, say, a fortnight spent there.  I have spoken to a few folk already who say they'd want:
* single rooms in hotels;
* not a complete rush but with time to relax and enjoy;
* ability to bring friends / family too
* volcanoes ...

Based on this feedback Mike could put together a draft itinerary with some costings depending on the number of us travelling.  He would then need to have a commitment with deposits by around October.
Do please be in touch if you'd like to receive further information as it becomes available.
Many thanks
Best wishes
Cathy

Meeting tonight re air pollution on Kennington Park Road

to kprranw@gmail.com

Dear friends and neighbours,

I emailed a while ago about the TFL consultation around changes to the Central London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ):

The deadline for this is Sunday 25th June.

We're meeting tonight, (Monday 19th), 8pm at St Marys Newington to coordinate our responses to the consultation. Local Green party reps have said they'll come along and share their NO2 pollution readings and relevant campaigns from across Southwark (see below), and we have also invited local councillors and MPs.

We're really concerned that the proposed changes to the ULEZ isn't taking into consideration the boundaries of the zone - or properly considering the impact on residents living just outside. We already know that more than 31,547 vehicles drive along Kennington Park Road each day (almost 10,000 vehicles/day more than Kennington Road and almost twice as many vehicles as Kennington Lane) (source www.howpollutedismyroad.org.uk) and NO2 levels along Kennington Park Road are regularly more than 150% above EU limit (communitymaps.org.uk/project/air-quality-monitoring), which includes some of the highest readings across the whole of Lambeth. If the boundaries of the ULEZ mirror those of the CCharge zone, then ever more polluting traffic will be pushed down Kennington Park Road.
When we surveyed local residents last year, 41.67% of you supported expanding the congestion zone as far as the South Circular, and 25% supported expanding it to include KPR. We will be advocating that the ULEZ should be expanded to include areas outside of the CCharge Zone and, this evening, we will aim to come up with a paragraph that you can cut and paste into the 'other comments' section of the consultation response form as there are no specific questions about the boundaries of the zone.
We will submit a response to the consultation on behalf of KPRRANW, but it is also really important that as many people as possible submit individual responses.
We hope to see lots of you there this evening - please forward this email to any other local people or groups who you think would be interested.
Many thanks,
Lucy

A Brief History Of London In Riots | Londonist

A Brief History Of London In Riots | Londonist
... By the 19th century, Londoners had clearly had enough of religious rioting, and decided to revolt over the price of theatre tickets instead; which sounds like something that would happen at the Old Vic in 2017. The Old Price Riots of 1809 were a series of disturbances in Covent Garden Theatre, every night for two months, until ticket prices were reduced. The 19th century was, on the whole, much less violent, and most protests in London were peaceful. One of the largest was the Great Chartist Meeting which took place on Kennington Common in 1848. An estimated 150,000 people gathered to demand universal suffrage and fair voting practices. The Reform League Protest, in 1866, was a rowdier gathering with the same motivations. Soldiers were called in to prevent people from breaking into Hyde Park, but the only serious casualty was the park's iron railings. ... One of the last big disturbances in the city before 2011 was the 1990 Poll Tax Riot. Responding to the introduction of a tax which disproportionately affected poorer people, 200,000 people gathered on Kennington Common (again) and marched to Trafalgar Square to protest. The march grew violent as it reached the square, and the crowd was charged on by mounted police. The reaction against the tax helped to oust Margaret Thatcher from power, and it was scrapped in favour of council tax. ...
