Meeting tonight re air pollution on Kennington Park Road

to kprranw@gmail.com

Dear friends and neighbours,

I emailed a while ago about the TFL consultation around changes to the Central London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ):

The deadline for this is Sunday 25th June.

We're meeting tonight, (Monday 19th), 8pm at St Marys Newington to coordinate our responses to the consultation. Local Green party reps have said they'll come along and share their NO2 pollution readings and relevant campaigns from across Southwark (see below), and we have also invited local councillors and MPs.

We're really concerned that the proposed changes to the ULEZ isn't taking into consideration the boundaries of the zone - or properly considering the impact on residents living just outside. We already know that more than 31,547 vehicles drive along Kennington Park Road each day (almost 10,000 vehicles/day more than Kennington Road and almost twice as many vehicles as Kennington Lane) (source www.howpollutedismyroad.org.uk) and NO2 levels along Kennington Park Road are regularly more than 150% above EU limit (communitymaps.org.uk/project/air-quality-monitoring), which includes some of the highest readings across the whole of Lambeth. If the boundaries of the ULEZ mirror those of the CCharge zone, then ever more polluting traffic will be pushed down Kennington Park Road.
When we surveyed local residents last year, 41.67% of you supported expanding the congestion zone as far as the South Circular, and 25% supported expanding it to include KPR. We will be advocating that the ULEZ should be expanded to include areas outside of the CCharge Zone and, this evening, we will aim to come up with a paragraph that you can cut and paste into the 'other comments' section of the consultation response form as there are no specific questions about the boundaries of the zone.
We will submit a response to the consultation on behalf of KPRRANW, but it is also really important that as many people as possible submit individual responses.
We hope to see lots of you there this evening - please forward this email to any other local people or groups who you think would be interested.
Many thanks,
Lucy
On behalf of Kennington Park Road Residents Association and Neighbourhood Watch

A Brief History Of London In Riots | Londonist

A Brief History Of London In Riots | Londonist
... By the 19th century, Londoners had clearly had enough of religious rioting, and decided to revolt over the price of theatre tickets instead; which sounds like something that would happen at the Old Vic in 2017. The Old Price Riots of 1809 were a series of disturbances in Covent Garden Theatre, every night for two months, until ticket prices were reduced. The 19th century was, on the whole, much less violent, and most protests in London were peaceful. One of the largest was the Great Chartist Meeting which took place on Kennington Common in 1848. An estimated 150,000 people gathered to demand universal suffrage and fair voting practices. The Reform League Protest, in 1866, was a rowdier gathering with the same motivations. Soldiers were called in to prevent people from breaking into Hyde Park, but the only serious casualty was the park's iron railings. ... One of the last big disturbances in the city before 2011 was the 1990 Poll Tax Riot. Responding to the introduction of a tax which disproportionately affected poorer people, 200,000 people gathered on Kennington Common (again) and marched to Trafalgar Square to protest. The march grew violent as it reached the square, and the crowd was charged on by mounted police. The reaction against the tax helped to oust Margaret Thatcher from power, and it was scrapped in favour of council tax. ...

The Tube Map Is Full Of Lies | Londonist

The Tube Map Is Full Of Lies | Londonist
... Looking at this, you might assume that Elephant & Castle is much closer to Kennington than to Borough station — maybe about four times closer. In fact, Elephant is around 100 metres closer to Borough than it is to Kennington. Why's that, then? You'll notice E&C is on the borders of fare zones 1 and 2. If the station were shifted closer to Borough, then the fare boundary would also have to move. That'd upset the parallel with another border station, Vauxhall, to the west. The best compromise is to place the Elephant within kissing distance of Kennington. ...

ES Views: Building more homes is the solution to the housing crisis | London Evening Standard
... There are so many new tower blocks going up around where I live in Kennington and along the South Bank. I rarely see anybody going in and out of them and no real sense of community is being developed.
These properties are too expensive for most south London residents. It also clear that some new developments are so shoddy and poorly constructed that there is no way they will last a lifetime. These developments may bring in extra revenue for local councils, but what happened to the authorities making decisions that will be of benefit  to the people who actually vote  for them?
The whole housing market in London is largely broken. How can we fix it?
